Melbourne Airport Rail

Melbourne Airport Rail is a major Victorian and Australian government transport project that will deliver a direct rail connection between Melbourne’s CBD and Melbourne Airport via Sunshine, including a new station at Keilor East.
The project is now being delivered in stages, with construction underway on the $4.1 billion first stage between West Footscray and Albion. These works will transform Sunshine into a major transport superhub and upgrade more than six kilometres of track, including new rail bridges, additional platforms at Sunshine and rebuilt stations at Albion and Tottenham. The upgrades will increase capacity through the corridor and prepare the network for Melbourne Airport Rail and future electrified services to Melton.
The future airport rail line will include a new station at Keilor East, providing rail access for communities including Keilor East, Airport West and surrounding suburbs that have historically relied heavily on road transport. The station will connect these communities directly towards Melbourne Airport and, via Sunshine and the Metro Tunnel, towards the CBD.
Once the full Melbourne Airport Rail project is delivered, trains are planned to operate every 10 minutes, with journeys between Melbourne Airport and the CBD taking around 30 minutes. The project will also provide connections at Sunshine for passengers travelling to and from regional Victoria.
Stage 1 works are progressing now, laying the groundwork for the future extension of the rail line through Keilor East to Melbourne Airport.
